On the ridge of the Daubenschlag rock above Ernolsheim-lès-Saverne stand the remains of a fortress that was never finished. Built around 1158 by Count Hugo of Dagsbourg, it was abandoned before completion, and a later attempt by the Lichtenberg family around 1260 to rebuild it also failed. Buried underground for centuries, the site was only uncovered through excavations carried out between 1984 and 1994, which revealed dressed stones with bossage work and a few artefacts, including signal horns.
