# Château du Valasse

Gruchet-le-Valasse, Seine-Maritime, Normandie

Château du Valasse stands in Gruchet-le-Valasse (Seine-Maritime), in the Normandie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 18th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

North of Rouen, the château du Valasse stands on the site of a Cistercian abbey founded around 1150 by Galéran IV of Meulan, a count returning from crusade. Damaged during the Hundred Years' War and again during the Wars of Religion, the abbey church was eventually destroyed after the Revolution, when a shipowner from Le Havre converted the monastic buildings into a residence. Visitors today find a long main range flanked by two low wings, a trace of a history that moved from religious life to industry before the town took ownership.
