A few kilometres from Fanlac, on a hillside overlooking the valley towards Montignac, the château du Sablou is chiefly remembered for a grim chapter of the Second World War: from January to December 1940 it held communist and trade-union activists brought there from across France. Built mainly in the mid-18th century by the Chapt de Rastignac family and altered in the following century, the building is now privately owned. A memorial stone stands nearby in the Fanlac valley, close to the Thonac stream, in remembrance of those who were interned there.
