Standing on a hilltop in the Sundgau region at Leymen, right at the Swiss border, Landskron castle overlooks the bend of the Rhine and the outskirts of Basel. Built before 1297 and later reinforced by Vauban after 1665, the fortress had a long military history before being destroyed in 1813 during the campaign of France, with only its rectangular keep spared from demolition. That surviving keep now gives visitors a view stretching across both France and Switzerland.
