On the banks of the Sèvre Niortaise river, the ruins of the Coudray-Salbart castle recall a stronghold built between the 12th and 13th centuries by the lords of Parthenay-Larchevêque, with financial backing from the Plantagenets. Six massive towers, connected by a vaulted rampart walk, remain from the medieval double enclosure, some still showing ribbed chambers and carved fireplaces. The site played a strategic role in the conflicts between the Capetians and the Plantagenets over control of Poitou, before being besieged in the 15th century.
