# Château de Vitré

Vitré, Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne

Château de Vitré stands in Vitré (Ille-et-Vilaine), in the Bretagne region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: milieu 11th century, 12th century, first quarter of the 13th century, 14th century, 15th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

At Vitré, the castle occupies a triangular site at the far end of the walled old town, perched on a rocky spur above the Vilaine river. Its towers, mostly dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, reflect successive rebuildings that began with an 11th-century keep and continued under the Laval lords who turned the fortress into a more comfortable residence. Today the site combines medieval military remains with the town hall, which has occupied part of the enclosure since the early 20th century.
