Rebuilt after a fire in 1720 to designs by Germain Boffrand, a pupil of Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the château de Vaux stands at Fouchères, on the edge of the Forêt d'Orient, some twenty kilometres from Troyes. Its façades of white Tonnerre stone, decorated with carved masks and mythological reliefs, form a central block flanked by two projecting wings beneath steep Mansart roofs. Inside, panelling, marble fireplaces and period flooring recall the successive building campaigns carried out by the d'Aubeterre and later Maupas families.
