At Chançay, in the Indre-et-Loire, the Valmer estate is visited chiefly for its terraced gardens laid out on a hillside above the Brenne valley in the 17th century. Since the Renaissance main building burned down in 1948, what remains to see today is the Louis XIII pavilion, a chapel carved into the rock, and seven successive terraces. A walled kitchen garden of one hectare, home to hundreds of heirloom plant varieties, and a vineyard producing AOC Vouvray wine round out the visit.
