# Château de Thoraise

Thoraise, Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Château de Thoraise stands in Thoraise (Doubs), in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. No visits are on record for this building.

The château de Thoraise stands on a bend of the Doubs river, locked by a rock outcrop, about ten kilometres from Besançon, whose own fortified bend it echoes. The present building, flanked by two square towers and a keep, is the result of successive rebuildings dating back to its medieval origins under the Montferrand family in the thirteenth century. The painter Gustave Courbet used it as the subject of a canvas in 1865. The château itself is not open to visitors, but the surrounding grounds can be seen from a footpath running along the riverbank.
