# Château de Sancerre

Sancerre, Cher, Centre-Val de Loire

Château de Sancerre stands in Sancerre (Cher), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is not open to visitors.

The feudal castle of Sancerre once stood atop a hill overlooking the Loire valley, home to the powerful counts of Sancerre from the 11th to the 15th century. Torn down in 1621, only a cylindrical keep from the late 14th century remains, known as the tour des Fiefs, the sole tangible trace of the medieval stronghold. The rest of the grounds now hold a 19th-century mansion and a private park, unrelated in style to the former fortress. Visitors mainly come for this standalone tower and the view it offers over the vineyards and the river.

**Not open to visitors**

The 19th-century château is now a hotel residence (Les Hauts de Sancerre) and is not open to visitors. The Tour des Fiefs, the last remnant of the medieval castle, can be visited.
