At the top of the village of Saint-Maime, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, stand the remains of a castle that once served as residence to the counts of Forcalquier, the last of whom, Raymond-Bérenger V, died in 1245. The site preserves an octagonal keep built of limestone, 7.50 metres high, along with the castral chapel of Sainte-Agathe attached on its southern side. Inside the chapel, wall paintings from the 14th century depict apostles beneath trefoil arches. The rocky outcrop gives an open view over the Mane plain and the confluence of the Laye and Largue rivers.
