In Villecerf, in the Seine-et-Marne department, the château de Saint-Ange stands on the site of a former pleasure residence built in the 16th century by Anne de Pisseleu, Duchess of Étampes, of which no original structure remains. The present château, more modest in scale, was formed in the 19th century out of a former gatehouse, after the Renaissance building had been entirely demolished at the end of the 18th century. The park still holds tangible traces of the estate's former splendour: retaining walls decorated with vases, staircases, a canal and a basin, remnants of a once-renowned system of water gardens. Visitors come here less for the building itself than for what survives, among the greenery, of a vanished art of garden design.
