The château de Ruère stands on a small hill east of the hamlet of Ruères, in the commune of Saint-Léger-Vauban in the Yonne department, about twenty kilometres southeast of Avallon. What remains of the fourteenth-century fortified house, altered in the sixteenth century, is now limited to a seigneurial residence, a dovecote and the base of a square tower, all still in private hands. Anyone travelling there mostly sees a boundary wall visible from the road at the entrance of the village, the last trace of a complex once surrounded by moats that no longer exist.
