# Château de Roussillon

Roussillon, Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Château de Roussillon stands in Roussillon (Isère), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second quarter of the 16th century). The building opens only occasionally, for events.

At the heart of the town of Roussillon, in the Isère department, stands a pleasure château built in the mid-16th century for Cardinal François de Tournon, the only Renaissance-style castle in the area. The building, whose design is attributed to the Italian architect Sebastiano Serlio, combines a former fortified house, a new château resembling a Florentine villa, and a long west wing linked by a covered bridge. Visitors can see the cardinal's apartments on the second floor, along with the openwork newel staircase. It was also within these walls that the Edict of Roussillon was signed in 1564, setting January 1st as the first day of the year.

**Opens occasionally**
