The château de Pouilly-sur-Saône stands on a site occupied since the 9th century, on the bank of the river, a short walk from the village church. The building seen today largely dates from 1720, rebuilt after a demolition ordered by Henri IV at the end of the 16th century. Its terrace facing the water, flanked by two brick turrets, remains the oldest surviving part of that reconstruction. The estate also carries traces of a lesser-known industrial past, tied to a wood-distillation factory set up in the 19th century by an uncle of Gustave Eiffel.
