# Château de Pontivy

Pontivy, Morbihan, Bretagne

Château de Pontivy stands in Pontivy (Morbihan), in the Bretagne region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 16th century, 18th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Standing on a promontory above Pontivy, this four-sided fortress with corner towers and dry moats was built around 1485 by viscount Jean II de Rohan, on a new site set back from the Blavet river. Combining military strength with the comfort expected of a great lord, the stronghold went through the Wars of Religion before falling into serious disrepair by the early twentieth century. Now owned by the town since 2015, it still shows its massive towers, granite corbelled battlements and covered, crenellated wall-walk, all typical of late medieval military architecture.
