In the Charente-Maritime department, the château de Plassac preserves traces of a site occupied since the Middle Ages, remodelled in the Renaissance under the Duke of Épernon and largely rebuilt in the eighteenth century, flanked by outbuildings and stables. Remnants of the medieval fortress survive, including a gatehouse decorated with flamboyant pilasters, along with the moats that once surrounded the original castle. The walled park, marked by four round towers, rounds out an estate that also served as a filming location for a television programme on the Duchess of Berry.
