In Parthenay, in the Deux-Sèvres region, the ruins of the castle overlook a bend of the Thouet river, on the site of a fortress built from 1227 by the Larchevêque lords. Demolished in 1830 to make way for a public square, the structure left behind sections of curtain walls, a restored round tower and remains of the entrance gatehouse. Visitors mainly come for the view over the valley and for the nearby Saint-Jacques gate, a former fortified access to the upper town.
