Built in the early seventeenth century in the Oise region, the château de Mortefontaine owes its reputation to Joseph Bonaparte, who made it his country residence from 1798 to 1814 and hosted much of Parisian society there. It was here that Napoleon I signed the trade treaty with the United States and the preliminary terms of the Peace of Amiens. The estate, with its park and ice house, also inspired Gérard de Nerval's story Sylvie. It is now a private property.
