In Montsûrs, in the Mayenne department, two towers mark the site of a former stronghold, said to be the birthplace of André de Lohéac, a companion of Joan of Arc. Built on natural escarpments and shielded by moats fed by the Jouanne and Vesnard rivers, the castle became the home of Bertrand du Guesclin after his marriage to Jeanne de Laval in 1374. The Renaise tower, nicknamed the Paradis aux Biques, and the Fuie tower are the only remains of a fortress that once had several towers and a drawbridge, the rest having been pulled down in the 19th century to build the parish church.
