# Château de Montlaur

Montaud, Hérault, Occitanie

Château de Montlaur stands in Montaud (Hérault), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

On the commune of Montaud, the ruins of the château de Montlaur stand on a spur of the last Cévennes foothills, looking out over the plain toward the coast. Cradle of a noble family recorded since the 11th century, the stronghold endured two sieges during the Wars of Religion before being dismantled in 1622. What remains today - a fortified terrace, a watchtower, and traces of redans forming an irregular pentagonal layout - offers a notable example of medieval military architecture in the Bas Languedoc region.
