# Château de Montaillou

Montaillou, Ariège, Occitanie

Château de Montaillou stands in Montaillou (Ariège), in the Occitanie region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second half of the 13th century). No visits are on record for this building.

Perched on a mound above the village, the ruins of Montaillou castle recall one of the last Cathar strongholds in the Ariège, which fell after its lord Bernard d'Alion was burned at the stake in 1258. Visitors come less for the architecture, now reduced to a few sections of wall, than for the history of the place: here the villagers were gathered by the Inquisition in 1309 before being taken to Carcassonne. The site overlooks the upper valley of the Hers, once the border between the county of Foix and the Sault region.

**No visits on record.** No opening hours or ticketing found.
