On the right bank of the Loire, a few kilometres from Blois, the château de Menars still bears the imprint of the figures who shaped it: Madame de Pompadour, who acquired it in 1760 and entrusted its enlargement to Ange-Jacques Gabriel, and later her brother the marquis de Marigny, who continued the work with Soufflot. The estate combines a 17th-century main building with wings and pavilions added in the following century, set within a park sloping down to the river, complete with a grotto, a basin and a rotunda holding a statue. A private property, it opens to visitors only on rare occasions.
