On the commune of Joursac, in the Cantal, the ruins of the Mardogne castle stand on a basalt outcrop that once overlooked an extensive lordship recorded as early as 1229. Built during the 12th and 13th centuries, the structure was devastated by fire in 1720, after which local residents salvaged its stones for other buildings. What remains includes a square tower with two stacked vaulted chambers, a vaulted cellar, a masonry cistern, and sections of the surrounding wall along with its rampart walk. Notably, the tower's doorway opens at ground level, unlike neighbouring keeps where entry is usually on the upper floor.
