# Château de la Motte

In southern Normandy, in the Orne department, the château de la Motte stands at the end of a 900 metre avenue linking Joué-du-Plain to Écouché, among the longest in the region. The site traces back to a Viking era castle mound, though the buildings seen today date mostly from the 18th and early 19th centuries, following the destruction wrought by the Revolution. Visitors can still see moats, an ice house, a belvedere, along with 17th century outbuildings and stately outbuildings attributed to architects from Argentan. The estate also played a significant role in the Norman Resistance during the Second World War, operating under the cover of a dairy.
