Standing on a hillside in Turquant, near Saumur, the château de la Fessardière overlooks the Maine-et-Loire countryside from its broad terraces. Built in the 17th century, it is remembered as the birthplace of admiral Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars, and for having held, in 1961, several future Algerian leaders under house arrest, among them Ahmed Ben Bella and Mohamed Boudiaf. The estate, now devoted to winegrowing, keeps in its tuffeau cellars old presses and vats beneath vaults reminiscent of a church.
