The château de la Dauphine stands on the hills above Fronsac, in the heart of the Libourne vineyards, within a wine estate built between 1744 and 1750 for a judge of the duchy of Fronsac. Its name recalls the stay of Marie-Josèphe de Saxe, wife of the dauphin of France and mother of Louis XVI, shortly after the building was completed. Having passed through several families, including that of the Moueix wine merchants and later Jean Halley, the estate now covers 53 hectares farmed under biodynamic methods. Visitors can see a circular gravity-fed vat house, an unusual feature in the Bordeaux region.
