On the Île du Prieuré at L'Isle-Adam, in the Val-d'Oise, once stood a castle that passed successively through the hands of the Villiers, Montmorency, Condé and Conti families, the latter making it their main residence outside Paris for seven generations. The medieval stronghold, rebuilt several times over the centuries, was torn down in the early 19th century following the Revolution. The building visitors see on the site today dates from the 19th century, built in a Louis XIII style, and now houses the administrative offices of the Louis-Senlecq museum of art and history.
