Perched on a rocky spur above the Oise valley, the remains of Guise castle trace ten centuries of military architecture, from its medieval keep to the bastions designed under Francis I and later reworked by Vauban. The site endured sieges, the Wars of Religion and heavy destruction during the First World War, before being rescued by volunteer work camps starting in 1952. Visitors can walk through the fortified enclosure, its old gates and a surviving countermine gallery, in the town of Guise in the Aisne department.
