# Château de Guînes

The château de Guînes no longer stands: it was once a stronghold in the Pas-de-Calais region, fought over by France and England for centuries, before being fully destroyed at the end of the 16th century. Built at the close of the 12th century by Count Baudouin II, it withstood sieges led by Edward III, Philippe le Bon and François I, until Spanish raids finally levelled it between 1595 and 1598. Its site is now occupied by the Guînes clock tower, put up in 1763.
