Perched on a rock overlooking the Arve valley at more than 700 metres of altitude, the ruins of Faucigny castle mark the birthplace of the lords of Faucigny from the 11th century onward. Traces remain of the fortified gate flanked by two towers and of the seigneurial hall, though the square Romanesque keep was pulled down in the 19th century. The site is chiefly visited for the view over the valley and for the history of this small lordship that once controlled this alpine passage.
