The château de Crénille stands on the right bank of the Yerres river, on the outskirts of Chaumes-en-Brie, reached via the road to Argentières. Built in the 19th century, it was remodelled in a so called Henri II style by the lawyer Jules Nicolet, who owned it and also served as mayor of the town. The estate later passed to Agénor de Gramont, prince of Bidache and duke of Guiche, married to Marguerite de Rothschild. Its history of successive owners, moving from local notability to high aristocracy, is what gives the place its character.
