Near the borders of the Perche and Dunois regions, the château de Courtalain was built in 1483 by Guillaume d'Avaugour and passed through generations by marriage, first to the Montmorency family and then, in 1862, to the Gontaut-Biron family who still live there today. Its façades combine several periods, from the Renaissance to English neo-Gothic and the 18th century, giving the whole an assembled rather than uniform character. The grounds, planted with cedars brought from Lebanon, form an English-style park surrounding the buildings. The estate also has a lesser-known chapter of history: in 1939 it sheltered Egyptian antiquities and Napoleonic collections from the Louvre ahead of the German advance.
