The building has a turbulent past, having been besieged in medieval times, turned into a summer residence and later into offices for a sugar refinery, before being destroyed by fire on the morning of the D-Day landings in June 1944. Rebuilt in the years that followed, it is now privately owned and run as a holiday let.
