> Le castrum occupe le centre du bourg. Il s'inscrit dans une vaste enceinte polygonale. Une première mention du château fait état de son incendie vers 1100 par le vicomte de Turenne. Il est relevé aussitôt, puis une nouvelle fois reconstruit au 13e siècle pour l'adapter aux nécessités de l'époque. Entre 1267 et 1453, Clérans eut à soutenir plusieurs sièges et fut tour à tour anglais et français. Plus tard, il servit de refuge aux Réformés.
