The château de Clagny no longer stands: built at the request of Louis XIV for Madame de Montespan, right next to Versailles, it has since vanished, so there is nothing left to visit on site beyond what survives in written accounts and old plans. First entrusted to Antoine Le Pautre, the project was taken over by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, marking his first major royal commission, with André Le Nôtre working on the gardens. The estate featured an Italian-style vestibule, a gallery said to have anticipated the Hall of Mirrors, and a chapel that served as a model for those at the Invalides.
