At Chaumont-en-Vexin, an isolated mound roughly 400 metres across carries the remains of a former stronghold, once capital of a medieval county and later a border fortress for the kings of France against nearby Normandy. Only a few sections of the masonry enclosure that once crowned the summit survive, along with a terraced slope on the eastern side, thought to be the remains of an outer bailey. There is little built structure left to tour; what strikes visitors instead is the commanding position over the plain, facing the Gisors hillside.
