Perched on a rocky ridge above the Isère valley near La Bâthie, the ruins of the château de Chantemerle mark a site chosen by the archbishops of Tarentaise to watch over the approach to their province. Built between the late 12th and 13th centuries, the complex combines a cylindrical keep pierced with arrow slits and a square residential tower, remnants of a stronghold that also served as a summer residence. Visitors come as much for the view over lower Tarentaise as for the medieval military architecture, now preserved as a consolidated ruin.
