At the heart of the village of Chaméane, in the Puy-de-Dôme, stand the remains of a castle first recorded at the end of the 10th century. The Renaissance-style façade, mullioned windows and pepper-pot roofs date from a 16th-century rebuilding, but the destruction of the keep and a fire set by German troops in 1944 left the site as a partial ruin. A wall flanked by round towers still partly surrounds the main range, and local tradition tells of a ghost said to appear at a window on the west side.
