The site owes its renown to the events of 1199, when Richard the Lionheart, come to put down a local revolt, was mortally wounded by a crossbow bolt fired from the keep. Visitors can see the Romanesque keep, a corner tower, the remains of a castle chapel and a seventeenth-century residential wing, along with a cement effigy recalling where the king's entrails were buried.
