The château de Cavanac, in the Aude department, stands on the site of a medieval castrum recorded as early as 1259, of which nothing remains visible except perhaps the base of its square tower. The present buildings, altered several times since the 17th century, are arranged around a courtyard lined with farm outbuildings, with a polygonal stair turret at the corner opposite the tower. Notable features include, on the north front, a few mullioned windows from the 1658 building campaign, and a Flemish-style gateway flanked by rusticated piers topped with carved vases.
