# Château de Carlat

Carlat, Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Château de Carlat stands in Carlat (Cantal), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The château de Carlat survives mainly as a place of memory today, perched on a basalt plateau in the Cantal region and reached by a stairway cut directly into the rock. Once the seat of the viscounty of Carladès, it hosted kings, rebellious lords and a fugitive princess, Marguerite de Valois, who stayed there for nearly a year before fleeing to Usson. Dismantled by order of Henri IV in the early seventeenth century, little remains beyond the rock outcrop, the carved access way and the weight of its history.

**Practical details not verified yet.** We know this château and where it is, but we have not yet checked its opening hours or prices at the source. We would rather tell you than display something we are unsure of.
