In the commune of Monts, a short distance south of Tours, the Château de Candé stands on a spur overlooking the Indre valley. Originally built in the Louis XII style, it was substantially transformed in the 19th century by a family of Anglo-Cuban sugar planters who turned it into a large neo-Gothic residence. The place is chiefly remembered for hosting, in 1937, the wedding of the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson, an episode that still draws visitors today. The estate, owned by the Indre-et-Loire department since 1974, covers 260 hectares of parkland and woods.
