Above the village of Saint-Étienne-Vallée-Française, in Lozère, the château de Cambiaire raises its medieval towers over a park of chestnut and cedar trees. Begun in 1366 and built of schist stone mixed with white quartz, the complex pairs a square keep topped with a pepper-pot turret with three round towers set at the corners of a residential wing enclosing a courtyard. Visitors also find a neo-Gothic chapel from 1875 and a reproduction of the Lourdes grotto, remnants of the site's past as a place of pilgrimage.
