In Villeneuve-d'Ascq, in the Brigode district, the eighteenth-century château built by Pierre Jacques Joseph de Brigode has almost entirely vanished: only its outbuildings, dating from 1820, remain, now serving as the clubhouse of a golf course. The main house itself disappeared in the twentieth century when a residential estate was developed in the former park. That landscaped park, laid out in the English style at the wish of Romain-Joseph de Brigode, is what survives as a listed site on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Visitors come less for a standing château than for the history attached to the place, from Louis XVIII's stop here while fleeing in 1815 to King George VI being hosted here during the Second World War.
