The château d'Ardelay survives today only as a keep, the last remnant of a fortified stronghold that once stood on this site at Les Herbiers, in the Vendée region. The medieval complex originally included a wooden motte, later replaced by a stone structure enclosed within a second wall that took in the manor, church and cemetery. The long ownership of the estate by the Vivonne family, followed by its passing to the dukes of La Rochefoucauld, shaped its seigneurial history from the 15th to the 17th century. Visitors come mainly for the isolated silhouette of the tower rather than for a château in the usual sense.
