In Saint-Marcel-Campes, in the Tarn department, the Château d'Aniès stands with its rectangular main building and two round towers on a site occupied since before the 13th century. The current building dates from the 16th century, but it followed an earlier fortified structure said to have hosted Simon de Montfort during the siege of the neighbouring town in 1212. What stands out today is the defensive layout that remains legible: spiral staircases inside the towers, arrow slits positioned to cover every side without blind spots, and a surviving machicolated gallery. The name of the place, sometimes Aniès, sometimes Agnès, is tied to a lady whose story leaves no confirmed trace.
