The château d'Ambres once stood at the centre of the village of Ambres, in the Tarn, on a slight rise that still overlooks the surrounding area. Originally built by the viscounts of Lautrec and later rebuilt by Gaston Phébus in the 14th century, it was home to a long line of lords, marquises and barons, ending with the Noailles family. Torn down on orders from the Convention during the Revolution, only scant remains survive today, and archaeological excavation has mainly uncovered traces of an earlier medieval settlement beneath the château site.
