Perched on a cliff above the Seugne valley, the Romanesque keep of Pons rises 33 metres over a public garden laid out on the grounds of the former castle. The site brings together a residential wing now used as town hall, remnants of ramparts, and the Saint-Gilles chapel, remains of a stronghold repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt since the 12th century. Visitors mainly come for the view from the terrace and for the architecture of the keep, considered one of the finest examples of a Romanesque palace-keep in the Saintonge region.
